Who's behind this

Ambitious but thrifty, endlessly curious, and always up for a good time.

I've taken more than 75 international trips across 35 countries, always on a budget that sacrifices comfort and luxury for novel experiences. For new places, I know myself well enough to make extensive research pay off tenfold, but when I arrive I do my best to keep things spontaneous. 9 times out of 10 I'll choose a hostel over a hotel, even if I get a private room, because I know how to find the ones that infuse trips with community, serendipity, and beauty. I care about a place's history, architecture, and nature as much as its food, music, and nightlife.

I'm not here to tell you I travel better than you. I'm here because I've made the mistakes, found the places that are unforgettable but affordable, and figured out what experiences are priceless. I also have a demanding full-time career, and I've learned how to optimize travel to make the most of my limited vacation days.

Why Nova Scotia?

After 35 countries, this seemingly quiet stretch of the Canadian coast is the one place I go back to every year. It's also where I discovered one of my greatest passions, where a lobsterman named Weasel once pulled me out of a shipwreck, and where I make my case for the one thing I almost never do: staying put.

A few favorite stays.

A few things I believe about traveling well.

i.

Budget travel is better travel

The most memorable places I've stayed were also the cheapest. A house on the water in Colombia, a garden hostel under a volcano in Ecuador, a hotel floating off an island in the Philippines. Spending more rarely buys a better story.

ii.

Know yourself, then plan around it

Leave room for serendipity, always. But the biggest upgrade to your trips is understanding how you actually like to travel and planning for that. It's the whole reason I built Wandertype.

iii.

Don't overweight comfort

Comfort is great. The mistake is treating it as the goal. Some of the best parts of a trip sit just past the point where things stop being easy, so weigh it honestly instead of defaulting to it.

iv.

Novelty is worth chasing

New places, new food, new ideas, new ways of living. Seeking out the unfamiliar is one of the most reliable ways I know to come home a slightly better version of yourself.
